Complacency puts data at risk

The recurring trend of large and dangerous data breaches can serve as a warning to companies or galvanize efforts to adopt new data loss prevention technology. According to a recent report by Corporate Counsel, companies that fail to make the connection between reported breaches and their own security are most at risk.

“You have to think that you will be breached. It’s a real battle out there,” security consultant Matthew Lane told the source. “Most companies that have the most trouble are confident that they won’t be breached.”

Data security, IP and technology executive Stuart Levi said data security is no longer simply a matter for IT departments to handle. With the far-reaching consequences that a data breach could have, he encourages c-level executives and corporate counselors to become part of the decision-making process when adding and maintaining data loss prevention programs.

The San Fernando Valley Bar Association’s Valley Lawyer magazine recently sought to prepare corporate counselors for the aftermath of data breaches. The source’s predictions included class action lawsuits, which have been proceeding in recent years even when damage cannot be conclusively proven.
